Remember too, there are ways that students can freeup some of your time. Adequate planning and supervision will minimize your teaching load and work to address the demands of practice management. For all of us, teaching takes time, an admittedly precious resource. You will discover that explaining, demonstrating and critiquing effectively reinforces your own knowledge. Let us assure you that teaching is a superb way to learn. You may wonder just how much an eager student is going to detract from your own learning. If you are a resident, your primary goal is to prepare yourself to practice medicine. As teachers you can have an influence on your students that will remain with them for years to come. If so, you might have based some of your earliest career decisions not only on what they taught you but also on how they taught you. What was it about them that influenced your learning experiences and your career decisions? Some of these teachers may have been mentors or role models. Try to remember some of your own teachers, the ones who truly made a difference in your life. Whether you have been teaching for many years or are completely new to the experience, you know that effective teaching takes skill and practice. It also contains specific information on how the Clerkship operates. This Handbook contains teaching ideas collected from your predecessors and peers to help you work with students in the Ob/Gyn Clerkship. We are confident that through your contribution to the intellectual, technical and personal growth of these medical students you will derive intellectual stimulation and personal satisfaction through your teaching and mentoring roles.
